Here's the latest scoop!

SCOOP #31

April 26, 2024

It's hard to believe that this is the final stretch of the school year!  We had an eventful first week back as we kicked it off with a special visit from Wayland's very own author, Jarrett Lerner!  Students were excited to watch as he demonstrated how to draw with just three things - shapes, lines, and letters.  From a spider to a ghost, he showed how even just tiny little changes can alter a characters expression - it was a wonderful treat, and a great way to start our week.  Please see his website for resources and activities your child can access at home.

CURRICULUM UPDATE:

Math: This week, second grade mathematicians continued to explore area with various shapes in our geometry unit.  We also read A Cloak for the Dreamer, written by Aileen Friedman and illustrated by Kim Howard. This folktale introduced students to how shapes and patterns are used in quilt making.  Each second-grade class will make their own quilt with paper!

Writing: Students learned to recognize a variety of transitional attention getting "red flag" words and phrases in the context of suspenseful segments.

Word Work: We finished unit 10 in Fundations.  Unit 11 will focus on three more double vowel teams: ee, ea, and ey.

Science:  We began learning about the butterfly life cycle and are looking forward to making observations of our own caterpillars in our Butterfly Journals.

Social Studies:  We introduced continents and oceans, and students sill soon become "tour guides" as they lead their classmates on a tour of an assigned continent.

North End Field Trip: We are so excited for our upcoming Field Trip to the North End on Friday, May 24th. Please fill out the permission form by WEDNESDAY, May 8th. The form is linked here. Additionally, please send your child to school with $25 cash in an envelope by Wednesday, May 8th.  If you are planning to chaperone the field trip, please complete the form. Plan on meeting us at Haymarket (Blackstone Street between Hanover Street and North Street) by 9:15 am.

REMINDERS:

Homework: We will have a regular homework week.

Monthly Message:  Please read, respond, and return your child's monthly message at your earliest convenience. We will write a monthly message for April next week, so please have your child bring their notebook into school if they have not already done so.
