Second Grade Scoop

with Ms. Reardon (Room 10), Ms. Cherwinski (Room 9), and Ms. Aronian (Room 2)

Here's the latest scoop!

SCOOP #28

March 28, 2024

As part of our Solids and Liquids unit in science, second graders used their engineering skills to design and build a bridge with various materials, including straws, popsicle sticks, and wooden cylinders.  This activity, which is a follow up to our tower experiment, challenged students to design a bridge that is 45 cm long and sturdy enough to hold heavy weights.  Students were creative, collaborative, and enthusiastic about this challenge.  Some students made a connection to the unfortunate incident of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland.  We used this opportunity to discuss the importance of the engineering process in the real world, while considering students' feelings about the collapse.

REMINDERS:

Talent Share: Talent shares begin next week! As a reminder, every second grader will share something that they are good at with the class. Whether in person, or in a video that you can send to your child's teacher, this is always one of the favorite shares of the year. We cannot wait to see what the second graders can do!

Spring conferences: Spring conferences have begun! It has been a pleasure catching up with families and sharing the wonderful progress second graders have made. If you have not done so, please click on your child's teacher's name below and sign up for a time that works best for you. Please reach out to your child's teacher if the available times do not work for you.
